How to Get a Georgia Insurance License

In order to sell insurance in Georgia, you must complete a pre-licensing course with an approved education provider and pass the state licensing exam.

Licensing Procedure
Step 1. Complete prelicensing education requirements through 1st Georgia Insurance School for the line(s) of insurance for which you wish to be licensed.

When you pass your final exam with at least 70% and submit your affidavit of completion, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.  Pre-licensing education is valid for one year from the date of completion.  You will need to take and pass the state exam within this timeframe.


Step 2. Schedule your state examination with Pearson VUE: (Scheduling Your State Exam)

When you pass the required state exam, Pearson VUE will electronically notify the department of insurance.

Making Exam Reservations

Licensing exams are provided by Pearson VUE. An exam fee must be paid at the time of reservation. You can make an exam reservation through the following methods:

    • Before you call, you must have the following:
      • Legal name, address, Social Security number, daytime phone number, and date of birth
      • Name of the exam
      • Preferred  exam date and test center location

What to Bring

Two forms of current signature identification:

  • A primary ID (photograph and signature, not expired) such as a Driver’s License or Passport
  • A secondary ID (signature, not expired) such as a Debit or Credit card


You will not be required to supply a copy of your Certificate of Completion at the exam.

Exam Procedures

  • Report to the test center 30 minutes before the exam to verify identification and be photographed for the score report.
  • No personal items are allowed in the testing room such as cell phones, watches, wallets, or purses.
  • Studying is not allowed in the test center.
  • The test administrator will provide you with materials to make notes or calculations. You may not write on these items before the exam begins or remove these items from the testing room.
  • You will have the opportunity to take a tutorial that will not reduce the exam time.

Exam Format

  • Each major line exam is given in a multiple-choice format.
  • The exam consists of two parts: (Note: The Adjuster exam consists of one section only)
    1. The general section deals with basic insurance product knowledge
    2. The state section deals with insurance laws, rules, and regulations, and practices that are unique to Georgia
  • Each exam contains “pretest” questions that are mixed in with the scored questions and are not identified. Pretest questions may not be covered in your educational materials and do not affect your final score!
  • The passing score required on each exam is 70%.
  • When you complete the exam, you will receive a score report marked “pass or fail”.
  • Candidates who fail will receive a score report that includes a numeric score, diagnostic and re-testing information.

Step 3. Get fingerprinted 
All licensees must be fingerprinted and submit to a background check.  (Fingerprinting)


Step 4. Submit your application and filing fee (Applying for your License)

After passing the exam, apply for your license by completing an application at Sircon

Step 5. You will be issued a license by the Georgia Department of Insurance once you pass your examination and the Department of Insurance is satisfied that you meet all other licensing requirements. 
THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE MAKES THE FINAL DECISION AS TO WHETHER TO LICENSE ANY APPLICANT UNDER GEORGIA INSURANCE LAW.


How to Renew a Georgia Insurance License

In order to renew your insurance license in Georgia, you must complete the required continuing education hours for the lines of insurance that you are licensed in.  All the hours must be completed and reported prior to your license renewal date to avoid a lapse in your license. 

(Checking Your CE Credits)

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Total Hours

24 hours biennially for Producers and Adjusters licensed less than 20 years

20 hours biennially for Producers and Adjusters licensed for more than 20 years

Compliance Renewal Date

Renewal date is the last day of the licensee's birth month, biennially. 

You may also need to take specific courses or earn specific credit types to renew your license. These course completions will count toward the total hour requirement.

LINE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

For All Licenses:

Ethics
3 hrs - Producers and Adjusters must complete 3 hours of Ethics as part of the total requirement. Excess Ethics hours will count toward the total hour requirement.

For Life & Health Producers:

Long Term Care
8 and hours - Producers must complete an initial 8-hour Long Term Care course prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating Long Term Care products. After completing the initial requirement, producers must complete a 4-hour Long Term Care renewal course every 24 months.

Annuities
4 hours - Producers who sell or wish to sell, solicit or negotiate annuities must complete an approved one-time 4-hour annuity training course. The satisfaction of the training requirements of another state that are substantially similar to this requirement shall be deemed to satisfy the requirement in Georgia.

For Property & Casualty Producers:

Flood
3 hours - Property and Casualty producers must complete a one-time 3-hour course on NFIP Flood education prior to selling flood insurance policies.

CARRYOVER HOURS

Excess hours (to a maximum of 1/2 of CE requirement for the next renewal period) can be carried forward to the next renewal period).  Excess Ethics hours may be applied to regular hours, but not carried forward as Ethics hours.

COURSE REPETITION

Courses may not be taken more than once in a reporting period.

If you meet any of criteria below, you may be exempt from the continuing education requirements.

EXEMPTIONS:

  • Non-residents
  • Individuals who hold a nonactive license due to having been licensed as an agent for 10 consecutive years or more and do not perform insurance functions other than receiving renewal or deferred commissions
  • Individuals that hold a CLU, CPCU, FLMI, CIC, CEBS, ChFC, CFP, CISR, CRM or AAI designation must complete 6 hrs annually (3 hrs being Ethics)
  • Newly licensed individuals may use their prelicensing education certificate for CE credit for the first year

Step 1. Register for and complete courses (Checking Your CE Credits)

For online courses, you are required to pass a certification exam with a score of at least 70%.  Once you have passed the certification exam, complete and submit the affidavit of complete to 1st Georgia Insurance School.  1st Georgia Insurance School will then report your continuing education credits to Sircon.

Monitor Requirements

Online and self study exams are required to be monitored by a disinterested third party (a person with no family or financial relationship).

Step 2. File a Renewal Application (Renewing Your License)

Once you have satisfied the renewal requirements for your license, you can file a renewal application at Sircon
